Is Single and Happy a Possibility?

For some reason, single and happy is not a combination that many people make. We are conditioned by society at an early age to believe that if you don’t have a mate you won’t be happy. Having a special person and real love is truly an asset; however happiness does not depend on it. If you think you need a mate to be happy you could be causing yourself unneeded stress. If you are single and looking for happiness by finding a mate, first look for happiness with yourself. Here are some steps to get you started:

1. Change Your Definition of What Single Means: If you want to live a more satisfying life alone you must first believe that you can. Instead of viewing single as empty and painful start seeing it as a time of opportunity, growth and freedom. If you have been carrying a negative belief about being single, changing it will not be easy but will prove to be rewarding. Changing this belief requires a leap of faith but as your beliefs begin to change so will your behaviors.

This is how it works:

Believing that you can only be happy if you are in a committed relationship has a huge effect on how you see yourself and how you feel. These beliefs may be setting you up for rejection because our perceptions produce our emotions, our emotions drive our behavior and our behavior creates our reality. Changing self-defeating beliefs will change our reality.

2. Get to Know Yourself: Focus on creating a joyful life now rather than waiting for someone else to provide it. If you’re on your own for the first time you probably haven’t had a lot of time to consider what really makes your heart sing. Take time to discover your passions and interests. Build a strong foundation by taking time for your physical health, your career, your financial security, your relationships and your mental and emotional well-being. By building a solid foundation you will always feel secure whether you are in a relationship or not.

3. Spend Time with Friends: Make time to spend with your friends. If you work from home and don’t see many people (or even if you work elsewhere) join a professional group. Being part of a group will provide an opportunity to meet like-minded people who will become good friends. There are large numbers of single people out there – find a way to connect with them. If you watch television commercials you might come to believe that most everyone is in a relationship. Statistics prove otherwise.
